Wassyl Slipak, the internationally renowned Ukrainian opera star, was killed by an enemy sniper in Donbas on June 29, 2016. He was only days from completing a second tour of duty as a member of a volunteer battalion in the war against Russian aggression.

The documentary – the title “Myth” was Slipak’s combat nickname and derived from his favorite operatic character Mephistopheles – traces Slipak’s transformation from stage star and civic activist to participant and, ultimately, one of countless tragic victims of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The screening will be followed by a discussion of the volunteer experience – their motives, battlefield experience, and post combat integration into civilian life - moderated by former military attaché to the Ukrainian embassy in Washington, DC, Major General (Ret) Volodymyr Havrylov. Experts will include Verkhovna Rada Deputy Yana Zinkevych, Chair of the Temporary Special Commission on the Legal Status of War Veterans and Chair of the Rada Committee on National Health Subcommittee on Military Medicine; Diana Vynohradova, a combat veteran, colleague of Vasyl Slipak and spokesperson for the Praviy Sector; and Vasyl’s brother Orest Slipak.

The documentary is in Ukrainian with English subtitles. Simultaneous Ukrainian interpretation will be available for the discussion.
