On April 14th, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States Volodymyr Yelchenko, U.S. astronaut of Ukrainian origin Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper, Head of the State Space agency of Ukraine Volodymyr Taftai, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs Simonetta Di Pippo and Acting Chief Historian at NASA Brian Odom discussed the role and contributions of Ukrainian scientists and engineers to the success of the Soviet Union space program as well as Ukraine‘s modern space and international space cooperation projects. Undoubtedly, the most famous Ukrainian that worked on space issues is the father of all Soviet cosmonautics, Serhiy Korolyov, who designed or contributed to most of the early USSR's rocket and space projects, including the launch of the first satellite Sputnik and the first manned space flight of Yuri Gagarin. The list of talented Ukrainians engaged in space technologies development and space exploration is very long. Some prominent examples are listed on the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation’s website at: https://usukraine.org/ukraines-contribution-to-the-world/science-technology/
