Nuclear Security in the Black Sea Region

NUCLEAR SECURITY IN THE BLACK SEA REGION:The most high-profile nuclear smuggling cases since the breakup of the Soviet Union in December 1991 have occurred in the Black Sea region. Following 2014, the Ukrainian nuclear regulatory authority lost control over nuclear materials, installations, radioactive sources, as well as nuclear security infrastructure in Crimea. This seminar with experts from SIPRI and from the region will discuss: **steps to minimize new risks **ways to maintain the existing regional nuclear security regime **how to identify and mitigate nuclear and radiological security risks in contested spaces such as the one that has opened in eastern Ukraine **proposals to promote horizontal communication within the region to share lessons learned as country plans are tested through a systematic programme of national exercises.
