Book Talk: The Politics of Police Reform
May 11, 2018 @ 9:00 am
The police in the post-Soviet space remain one of the least reformed institutions, despite broader democratic transformations. Erica Marat will use her new book to examine the conditions under which a meaningful transformation of the police is likely to succeed, using case studies from Ukraine, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan. The panel will discuss policing as a reflection of a complex society bound together by a web of casual interactions and political structures.Speakers **Erica Marat, Associate Professor and Director of Homeland Defense Fellowship Program, National Defense University; Former Fellow, Wilson Center **Lauren McCarthy, Associate Professor of Political Science and Legal Studies, University of Massachusetts Amherst; Former Title VIII Research Scholar, Kennan Institute WHEN: Friday, May 11 9:00 am – 10:00 am WHERE: Wilson Center – 6th Floor Board Room Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center One Woodrow Wilson Plaza 1300 Pennsylvania, Ave., NW Washington, DC 20004 FOR MORE INFORMATION: Phone: 202.691.4000 To RSVP: http://pages.wilsoncenter.org/20180511-MaratPoliceReform_Registration.html https://www.wilsoncenter.org/event/book-talk-the-politics-police-reform
